Other Supreme Court potentials...
If Harriet Miers qualifies then maybe we should look at these folks as well:
Marsha Clark, Robert L. Shapiro, Mark Geragos, Ben Stein, Anita Hill?
After the "great search" - this was our best find? I will admit that my perspective may be a bit narrow but I had hoped for someone with a few more credentials.
Seriously, I did my own search this morning between meetings and submit the following:

I have heard that Miers was put in charge of the Supreme Court replacement search -- she then pulled a Cheney and picked herself...

I've heard something similar to alice's recollection. I don't know that she was specifically put in charge of the SCOTUS nominee, but she was definitely point person on vetting judicial candidates. I guess that would naturally (probably) include the O'Connor replacement.
So, she likely did "pull a Cheney."
I told my wife this morning that GWB just gets confused, and can't distinguish between a person he picks to lead him to whom to pick, and the eventual pick. Too many layers, so just go with the first pick. Heh. For all we know, Michael Brown was merely tapped to find a replacement for his friend Allbaugh, and that's how he ended up as FEMA director.
